The food pyramid: a visual guide to proper nutrition?


We've all heard about the food pyramid, which is a visual diagram that seems to help us figure out what to eat and in what quantities to be healthy. 2. The second level. Vegetables (3-5 servings) and fruits (2-4 servings). Sources of vitamins, minerals and fiber.
3. The third level. Dairy products (milk, yogurt, cheese – 2-3 servings) and protein products (meat, poultry, fish, legumes, eggs, nuts – 2-3 servings). Sources of protein and calcium.
4. The top. Fats, oils, sweets (consume in moderation).
The idea is to build your diet from the bottom up, giving preference to products from the lower tiers.
Criticism and modern alternatives
Over time, the classical pyramid began to be criticized. The main complaints related to the fact that she did not distinguish between useful and harmful products within the same group. For example, whole-grain bread and a white loaf turned out to be at the base, although their health benefits are completely different. - Focus on the foundation. Vegetables, fruits, and whole grains should make up the majority of the diet. These are sources of fiber, vitamins, and slow carbohydrates.
- Moderation in protein and dairy products. Choose low-fat protein sources (poultry, fish, legumes) and dairy products.
- Distinguish between fats. Give preference to unsaturated fats (olive oil, avocado, nuts, seeds) and limit saturated and trans fats.
- Minimum at the top. Foods high in sugar, salt, and unhealthy fats (sweets, fast food, sugary drinks, processed meat) are only rare and in small quantities.
- Don't forget about water and activity. Drinking enough water and exercising regularly is an integral part of a healthy lifestyle, which is often added to modern dietary patterns.
The pyramid is not a dogma, but a landmark.
A guideline, not a dogma
The food pyramid, especially in its modern interpretations, can be a useful tool for forming healthy eating habits. It helps to understand the general principles of balance and diversity in the diet.
However, do not take it as a strict instruction. It is important to take into account the individual needs of the body, the level of activity, the state of health, and even the cultural characteristics of nutrition.
